  • Question: Can the knife be washed in the dishwasher?

    Answer: No, Opinel wooden-handle knives are not designed to be washed in the dishwasher. Hand-washing is recommended.
  • Question: Is the blade resistant to rust?

    Answer: Yes, the blade is made of Sandvik 12C27 Mod. Stainless Steel which is highly resistant to rust.
  • Question: Where are Opinel knives made?

    Answer: Opinel knives are made in the Savoie region of France.
  • Question: How big is it?

    Answer: This Opinel No.8 knife is about 4.3" closed, with a blade length of about 3.3", a blade steel thickness of about 0.07", a blade width of about 0.65", and a handle diameter of about 0.7".
  • Question: Is the handle plain, or does it have "opinel" written on it?

    Answer: The wooden portion of the handle does not have "opinel" engraved on it, but the stainless steel piece that locks the blade open or closed does have the size of the knife & "Made in France".
  • Question: Do these knives come with the Opinel name engraved on the handle, or is it blank?

    Answer: The Opinel name is stenciled on with black paint on top of the clear varnish. Older versions had the Opinel name branded into the wood.
  • Question: The handle of the blade has started to crack, any way of sealing it back and protecting it?

    Answer: Epoxy may be used to seal and protect the cracked handle.
  • Question: The Padouk version comes with a mirror-polished blade. Can anyone who has the walnut, oak, or olive version tell me what finish your blade has?

    Answer: All Opinel knives advertise sandvik 12C27 stainless steel blades, which are highly polished. If the received knife is not as desired, it can be returned.
  • Question: Do the premium handles swell in humid environments like the beechwood handles?

    Answer: Oak and walnut handles are tight-grained and should not swell in humid environments. Olive wood handles are oily and less likely to swell. Beechwood handles are more prone to swelling.
  • Question: I just received my opinel today. NO.8 with olivewood handle. The name is not printed at all on the handle. Is that normal?

    Answer: Yes, it is normal for the Opinel knives with exotic wood handles like olive wood to not have the Opinel logo printed on the handle. The blades are stamped with the Opinel logo and the knives come in an Opinel box.
  • Question: The locking mechanism is really hard to turn. Is there something I can do to loosen it? Thanks!
