Polonya'nın hızla mağlup edilmesinin ardından Fransa'yı istila hazırlıklarının sürdüğü dönemde, 1914'teki Schlieffen Planı'nı bir nebze değiştirerek yeniden uygulamak isteyen Alman genelkurmayınınkine alternatif bir harekat planı hazırladı. Taarruzun ağırlık merkezinin Belçika yerine zırhlı birlik harekatına uygun olmadığı düşünülen Ardenler Ormanı'na alınmasını öngören Orak Darbesi isimli bu tasarının Hitler tarafından kabul edilmesiyle, Manstein Fransa'nın altı haftada mağlup edilmesinin belki de en büyük mimarı oldu.
