  • Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859): French political scientist, sociologist, historian, politician and writer. He took an active role in French politics during the July Monarchy (1830-1848) and the Second Republic (1849-1851). He stayed in the USA for a while. During this period, together with his companion Gustave de Beaumont, he wrote the first volume of his cult work Democracy in America, as well as reference works on slavery, especially in the USA. He became famous with this two-volume work, which is considered the pioneer of political sociology and political science research. He left politics completely after the coup in 1851. He then focused on the conditions that prepared the French Revolution and the reasons for the failure of the Revolution. In The Old Regime and Revolution, which was designed as two books but only the first book was completed, the author wrote about the French Revolution in the XIV century. Louis argues that it is an extension of the modernization and centralization process. It reveals the roots of the French Revolution dating back to the Old Regime with documents and brings out the anatomy of the French society-French Revolution relationship. Show more
